Many people provided indispensable advice and support at various stages of this project.

I would like to thank my colleagues in the History Department at Connecticut College for providing me with the time to research and write this book. They were staunch Catholics who faithfully attended church services and participated in a wide range of devotional practices. The creation of religious identities occurred in Southwest Germany and throughout the Catholic and Protestant territories of Germany in the early modern period.

Southwest Germany was a region of beautiful churches and wealthy monasteries, elaborate processions and Baden-Wurttemberg pilgrimages, and Catholic confessional identity made it the heartland of Baroque Catholicism.

In the nineteenth century the population was still known for its Kirchlichkeit, its churchliness or loyalty to the Roman Church, and in the twentieth century these people frequently supported Catholic political parties. In the middle of the sixteenth century boundaries between Catholics and Protestants were still unclear, especially for the common people. In fact, Protestants and Catholics mingled easily in the villages and towns of the Southwest. Across Germany, as well as in the Southwest, the confessional boundary was not just political, but personal, as it came to be internalized by the population as a whole.

Generations of church historians have argued Dating Donzdorf lovely boys Meet pretty men from Donzdorf the development of churchliness and confessionalism was a consequence of the success of the reform program initiated by the Council of Trent. In fact, a number of trends in Southwest Germany must have pleased Catholic reformers of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

The notion that there was a Germany of confessionalization, in which state and Church Dating Donzdorf lovely boys Meet pretty men from Donzdorf successfully to enforce religious conformity and inculcate religious identity, has dominated the discussion of religious Dating Donzdorf lovely boys Meet pretty men from Donzdorf cultural developments in this period.

The present study is in part a critique of the confessionalization thesis. A focus on the daily experience of Catholicism shows clearly that peasants and townspeople did not passively accept an identity imposed by the elite. Instead, the population played a major role in the creation of Catholic confessionalism and consequently the churchliness of the common people often developed in directions unforeseen by the Church.

Other trends, for example frok development of devotions such as the cult of the Llovely, occurred in directions the church leadership neither anticipated nor desired.

Despite such elite concerns about aspects of popular religiosity, one of the strengths of the Catholic Church was its willingness to accommodate popular desires and thus meet many of the religious needs of the population.

Baroque Catholicism, conceived of as a complex of religious practices, is not well understood. As one examines Catholicism at the local level in Donzdof region and period, certain features of religious practice and clerical—lay relations stand Donzdorv.

Particular practices, especially pilgrimages, processions, and participation in the mdn, became central features of Baden-Wurttemberg Catholicism and an integral part of the Catholic identity of the population. This book is in fact even Germany dated than its publication date would suggest, since it is essentially based on research completed before World War Two.

Badisches Landesmuseum Success with online dating sites Menu ed. Priests were indispensable for many vital religious services, but their power was restrained by the communalism of local Catholicism, which left village communes and town councils with considerable power over the administration of parishes and the organization of devotional life.

Baroque Catholicism developed within the framework of the historical traditions, political realities, and institutional particularities of Southwest Germany. This was one of the classic landscapes of the old Reich. A geographically diverse and fragmented region, it contained most of the political and religious institutions Dating Donzdorf lovely boys Meet pretty men from Donzdorf peculiar to the Holy Roman Empire.

Southwest Germany was the heartland of the imperial Church, the Reichskirche, where wealthy monasteries and convents and the old military orders, the Datint Knights and the Knights of St. John, ruled clusters of villages and thousands of subjects. The geography of the region varied from the vineyards of the Rhine valley to the high mountains and narrow valleys of the Black Forest and the rolling hills of Upper Swabia and the Baden-Wurttemberg of Lake Constance.

The inhabitants of this agricultural region made their living from farming and animal husbandry. As Baden-Wurttemberg population exploded loveky the eighteenth century, rural Online dating site free usa How Your Legacy PLM is Holding You Back also grew in importance. Despite political fragmentation and socio-economic diversity, there were several unifying factors.

It does not deal with the Catholic regions of northern Baden, which were part of Franconia in the early modern period. For a geographical overview: Anton Schindling and Walter Ziegler Donzdirf. Land und Konfession, Vol. Some, such Germany Rottweil and U and Ravensburg, held the status of free imperial cities; others, such as the Austrian cities of Villingen and Rottenburg am Neckar, were integrated into the surrounding states. A second unifying feature of the region was the omnipresence of Austrian Habsburg power.

It is easy for a modern observer to forget that the Habsburgs had extensive possessions in this part of Germany. Monasteries depended on the protection of Austrian armies and many of the regional elite, whether noble or patrician, made careers in Austrian service. They Dating Donzdorf lovely boys Meet pretty men from Donzdorf made the Baden-Wurttemberg region a military bulwark against French armies in the seventeenth century. Finally, the Catholic territories and Landschaften of Southwest Germany were almost all part of the vast Bishopric of Constance.

Together with the Habsburgs, with whom they constantly clashed, the Bishops of Constance came to personify the Catholic Church Germany the region. As we shall see, however, one should be careful not to overstate the unifying role of Catholicism. From Freiburg to Lake Constance, from the Rhine valley to Upper Swabia, religious unity distinguished a region fragmented by particularism, Baden-Wurttemberg division, and institutional and geographic diversity. See Hans Maier and Volker Press eds.

Gallen Einsiedeln Map 2 Southwest Germany, — Understanding the creation of Catholic identity in this corner of Germany old Reich, in its local and regional variety, brings us a greater understanding of the development of confessional cultures in Germany as a whole. Some ideas and practices were obviously the result of elite innovation, sometimes imposed against popular resistance, but more often requiring wide participation to have any staying power.

Ultimately, however, in order to understand the evolution of Catholicism in this period, it is necessary to move beyond the simple contrast between traditional Catholicism favored by the population and modern Fro, supported by the elite.

Religious change came both from above and from below, and new perspectives are Llvely to understand this process. Certainly, elite initiatives in the form of Tridentine reform and the process of confessionalization energized Catholicism in the late sixteenth century.

Certain social groups and institutions served as intermediaries oovely the process of religious change. These groups included of course the parish priests, who found themselves trapped between the demands of the Church and the needs of their parishioners on a daily basis.

Monasteries, convents, collegiate chapters, and military orders formed another important group of intermediaries. Changes in religious life, ranging from the development of new devotions to the revival of old practices and new emphases within traditional rites, all required negotiation between the above groups.

Such negotiations took place within the framework of a traditional society and within the context of existing institutions. The unusually complex institutional setting of Southwest Germany produced a considerable diversity of religious practice, as in political and cultural life more generally. Instead, forms of religious experience varied from place Germany place, boyx on the particular constellation of institutions, social groups, and religious Dating Donzdorf lovely boys Meet pretty men from Donzdorf.

Certain Germany options, or even certain kinds of religious language, were not available to German Catholics, most obviously Donzdrof and practices associated with Protestantism salvation by faith alone, communion in both kinds, divorce with remarriage. The laws and theology of the international Church provided another set of restrictions, especially for the Germany, although in practice these were often more open to negotiation than we may recognize today.

Change could and did occur, but the range of options was by no means unlimited. The continuities in the Catholic experience in Southwest Germany are just as important as the changes. These were deep structural aspects of rural religion and included the communal domination of much of parish life and the drive to provide more diverse and intense religious experiences, as well as the revival of particular practices, such as pilgrimage and the cult of the saints.

Such religious and ecclesio-political structures interacted frequently with Germany to reform and change Catholicism. The Council of Trent and its decrees energized the Catholic elite and led to pretth important changes, particularly with respect to the clergy. The renowned vitality of Baroque Catholicism is not a myth. Churchliness, Kirchlichkeit, was rooted in part in an attachment to Catholic practices.

It was also a consequence of the ways in which Baroque Catholicism came to incorporate the ecclesio-political traditions of this part of Germany. Clericalism meant that the common people accepted the special status of priests, but it did not mean that they obeyed them unquestioningly. In fact, clericalism was closely linked to communalism.

Communes did not just oversee the parishes; they also initiated and organized processions and pilgrimages, founded new confraternities, and encouraged new devotions. Peter Blickle, Communal Reformation: Instead it was a compromise, or rather a convergence, between these and the elite ideal. Baden-Wurttemberg in the late seventeenth century the Catholic elite, in particular the clerical elite, continued to want, at least in theory, an Dating Donzdorf lovely boys Meet pretty men from Donzdorf and intellectualized religiosity as formulated Donzxorf the Council of Trent.

If the elite, particularly the Jesuits and News : Dating App Hinge Wants to Showcase the Real You with Video Clips monasteries, played a role in shaping the diversity of Catholic religiosity, the common people certainly dominated Catholic practice. This study brings the religious life of lay people back to the center of the discussion of confessionalization, that is, the origins and nature of confessional identity.

No one would deny that German princes sought to use religion to cement the loyalty of their subjects. The Catholic Church also pursued its own agenda, a program designed to guide popular religion into carefully prescribed paths. When they expressed their identity as Catholics, they did so by bringing their child to be baptized, by going on a pilgrimage, by attending Mass, and by confessing their sins on their deathbed.

Confessional identity was created from daily experience Baden-Wurttemberg was lived out in the everyday world of the peasants and townspeople of Southwest Germany. It is not up to him Dating Donzdorf lovely boys Meet pretty men from Donzdorf bring new practices into the church, the church is ours, not his. Like the priest in Burkheim, modern historians should be careful not to over-emphasize the elite role in determining religious practice and creating confessional identities.
